RezensionAuf dieses Kooperationswerk zweier genialer Autoren habe ich lange gewartet. Becky Albertalli hat mich mit ihrem Buch „Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda“ (dt. „Nur drei Worte“, neuerdings als „Love, Simon“ bekannt) nicht nur dahinschmelzen, sondern oftmals auch lauthals lachen lassen. Zucker pur, aber wunderschön und witzig. Adam Silvera dagegen hat mich mit „More happy than not“ mit gebrochenem Herzen, aber glücklich zurückgelassen. Ich habe, entgegen meiner Gewohnheit, Rotz und Wasser geheult, gleichzeitig aber auch gelacht. Überflüssig zu erwähnen, dass ich mit der Erwartung an „What if it's us“ herangegangen bin, anfangs himmelhoch zu jauchzen und am Ende zerstört zu werden. Mit dem Anfang hatte ich recht, mit dem Ende – eher nicht.Zum ersten Mal hat mich das Buch nach drei Seiten zum Lachen gebracht. Und das war nur der Auftakt zu mehreren Stunden Gekicher und Gelächter, wofür ich mehrfach merkwürdige Blicke kassiert habe. Der Humor ist großartig und es gibt eine Menge Situationskomik. Das ist nicht nur Arthur und Ben zu verdanken, die abwechselnd Kapitel erzählen, sondern auch den anderen auftauchenden Charakteren. Alle Figuren haben etwas Einzigartiges und waren mir so sympathisch, dass ich auch über ihr Leben und ihre Gedanken mehr wissen wollte. Es kam regelrecht Wohlfühlstimmung auf, wenn diese Nebenfiguren die Bühne betreten haben. Insbesondere am Anfang war das oft der Fall, denn nachdem sich Arthur und Ben das erste Mal gesehen haben, verlieren sie sich wieder aus den Augen und es dauert eine ganze Weile, bis sie das nächste Mal aufeinander treffen. Das hat viel erwartungsvolle Spannung aufgebaut. Ich konnte gar nicht schnell genug weiter lesen, um zu wissen, wann sie sich endlich wiedersehen. Die ersten zwei Drittel des Buches waren perfekt und genau das, was ich von ihnen erwartet habe.Leider konnte das letzte Drittel das Niveau nicht ganz halten. Am meisten enttäuscht haben mich die vorhersehbaren, unnötigen Dramen, die sich nicht nur zwischen Arthur und Ben, sondern auch zwischen ihnen und ihren Freunden abspielen. Es gab Entwicklungen, die so offensichtlich waren, dass ich schon hunderte Seiten vorher darüber Bescheid wusste. Außerdem hätten einige Streits verhindert werden können, wenn die Charaktere sich einmal gegenseitig hätten ausreden lassen statt nach zwei Wörtern anzunehmen, sie wüssten, worauf der Gegenüber hinaus will. Dass sowohl Arthur als auch Ben sich nicht nur gegenseitig nicht mehr sehen wollen, sondern auch noch all ihre Freunde auf einmal von sich stoßen, sodass beide völlig allein dastehen, war mir einfach zu viel künstliches Drama. Ich muss dem Buch zugute halten, dass diese Situation dann nicht unendlich ausgewalzt, sondern relativ schnell gelöst wird. Trotzdem hat sie mich so verstimmt, dass ich das Ende dann auch nur okay fand. Es war schon wie erwartet, traurig und doch hoffnungsvoll, aber die überflüssigen Dramen haben mich aus der Geschichte katapultiert, sodass ich den Schluss emotional sehr distanziert gelesen habe. Ich war meilenweit davon entfernt, Tränen zu vergießen; besonders glücklich war ich allerdings auch nicht.FazitIch bin mit der Erwartung an das Buch herangegangen, am Anfang viel zu lachen und am Ende zerstört zu werden. Die ersten zwei Drittel waren dann auch tatsächlich perfekt: Großartige Situationskomik und trockener Humor verbunden mit einzigartigen Charakteren, die Wohlfühlstimmung verbreiten, und erwartungsvoller Spannung. Zum Ende hin hat das Buch dann leider abgebaut. Es gab vorhersehbare, unnötige Dramen, die künstlich aufgebauscht wurden und mich den Schluss emotional distanziert haben lesen lassen. „What if it's us“ war lange alles, was ich wollte, aber da ich gegen Ende den Kontakt zur Geschichte verloren habe, vergebe ich nur vier Schreibfedern.

i mainly bought this book because i'm a huge fan of adam silvera, but i was extremely dissapointed as he sounded more like Becky Albertalli throughout this whole book and all those references made this book rather awkward to read, it's almost as if they tried too hard sounding like quirky teens and failed miserable. I wasn't surprised that Becky wrote like this as she seems to be an overrated mediocre writer, but Adam's other books were actually really good so I expected more from him. naturally i will give him a second chance when his next book comes out but NO MORE BECKY ALBERTALLI, SORRY!

Das Buch habe ich als Geschenk für eine Freundin gekauft, die bereits vorige Bücher des Autoren gelesen hatte. Sie freute sich sehr, als sie es auspackte. Titelbild, Schmutztitel etc war alles zufriedenstellen. Leider ist die Begeisterung beim Lesen dann verflogen. Die Geschichte verlief im Sande und die Figuren waren eher klischeehaft gestaltet. Der Schreibstil ist mittelmäßig und kennzeichnet keine Person wirklich individuell aus.Leider decken sich also Erwartungen nicht mit dem endgültigen Produkt.Vielleicht mag man es besser, wenn man bisher nichts anderes vom Autor gelesen oder gehört hat.Der Aussage meiner Freundin zufolge war ein Grund für die Enttäuschung vielleicht auch, dass es sich um eine Zusammenarbeit zweier Autoren handelt und die Ideen und Stile miteinander kollidieren.

I'd call it a gay fairytale set in modern day far away from dating apps. I was scared because Adam&Becky's love child was so hyped. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ben & Arthur's story. One could clearly feel that Becky was bringing dreamy Arthur alive and Adam doing the same for more cautious/sceptical Ben. While some conflicts were rather foreseeable, it didn't take anything away from the story. Some of the secondary characters fell a bit flat but that was fine by me, seeing that the EPIC love story between the protagonists was the main focus. This is the story that every gay grandparent would like to tell their grandchildren on "how we met". Is it realistic? Who knows? I would like to believe that there are still caring, romantic people out there who would go the extra mile to woe a prospective partner.
